What Duke Field is
Duke Field is Eglin Auxiliary Field 3, about twelve miles north of Eglin's east gate on SR 85 and roughly three miles south of downtown Crestview, in Okaloosa County.
It is home to the 919th Special Operations Wing, an Air Force Reserve Command wing supporting AFSOC. The mission is operations and maintenance personnel for non-standard aviation, foreign internal defense and combat aviation advisor programs, plus MQ-9 operations and formal flight training.
Aircraft assigned: C-146A Wolfhound, U-28A and MQ-9 Reaper, with AC-130J Ghostrider beddown in preparation.
Personnel: about 1,300 traditional reservists, 280-plus Air Reserve Technicians, 86 Active Guard Reserve and 47 civilians. Squadrons include the 2nd, 5th, 711th and 859th Special Operations Squadrons.
That mix makes Duke a different housing picture from an active-duty pipeline base. A traditional reservist driving in for drill weekends and an Air Reserve Technician working there five days a week should weigh commute completely differently.
Where to live
Crestview is the obvious answer — three miles up SR 85, the county seat of Okaloosa, growing infrastructure and new developments. It offers the most space for your dollar anywhere on the Emerald Coast, with bigger lots and a more rural feel, in the A-rated Okaloosa district. About 30 to 45 minutes to the beach, which most families here decide is a fair trade.
Laurel Hill and Baker are further north and more rural still — worth a look if land matters more to you than amenities.
Niceville and Valparaiso are a longer run but put you closer to the coast and to Eglin, which matters if your household has a second commuter or if you are an ART who might rotate.
Fort Walton Beach is realistic for drill weekends but a long daily drive.
VA loans for Guard and Reserve
Guard and Reserve members qualify for a VA loan. The documentation differs: where an active-duty member needs a current LES and orders, Guard and Reserve typically need a DD-214 plus current orders or a points statement.
Start the Certificate of Eligibility the week your orders drop. It is free, it usually takes minutes through your lender or at VA.gov, and not having it is the single most common cause of an avoidable closing delay.
The rest applies as normal: no down payment, no mortgage insurance, and no loan limit at all with full entitlement. The funding fee runs 2.15 percent on a first use with less than 5 percent down, drops to 1.50 percent if you put 5 percent down, and is waived entirely for veterans receiving service-connected disability compensation.
